"The worst campaign in Call of Duty history" – what they say about the single-player mode of Modern Warfare III

Formally, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is set to be released on November 10th, but pre-order customers can already play the single-player campaign. However, it doesn't seem to be a good start, as the local "single" mode is being called one of the worst in the entire history of Call of Duty.

Here's what the reviews of the story part say:

  • The most significant change compared to previous games is the so-called "Open Battle Tasks." These are open locations where objectives are marked, but how to achieve them, in what order, and by what means, is up to you.
  • It sounds good in theory, but the execution ruins it. The locations are stitched together from parts of the Warzone battle royale map, the tasks are simplistic, and it seems like there was significant cost-cutting on the direction: when you complete open battle tasks, your teammates only communicate with you via radio – there's no physical interaction or cutscenes.
  • Despite the open locations, the campaign turned out to be very short: it can be completed in three to four hours. Even some of the open battle tasks can be completed in just a few minutes.

  • There are attempts to diversify gameplay, but the local stealth is described as "incredibly primitive" and at the same time irritating. For instance, on one of the missions, you are exposed if you get too close to an enemy. Failing stealth results in a "game over," so to complete the mission, you have to follow a strictly defined path.
  • The story itself is also unclear. The new Makarov doesn't resemble a good villain, and the story is characterized as "a fashion show of operatives, who will later be sold for Warzone." The story abruptly ends and leaves no sense of completion.
  • The signature Hollywood direction of Call of Duty is only felt in the first mission.
  • The only plus point mentioned is the high-quality cutscenes, but they're definitely not enough to justify the existence of the single-player mode in Modern Warfare III.
